Lifesaving WP Newsletter Forwarded
We have hit peak competition season and our nippers, lifeguards and masters are all preparing for SA champs coming up in March and April so this newsletter is all about competition! In this edition we review the LWP senior champs this past weekend, preview the LWP nipper champs later this month and view the final LWP Senior team to compete at Inter-regionals.
LWP LIFEGUARDS BRING THE HEAT!
Well, more accurately.... Nature brought the heat, the lifeguards brought the action! We certainly had an abundance of both at the 2010 LWP Senior champs this past weekend at Camps Bay and Clifton 4th. The ski and relay events were competed on saturday 6th March at Camps Bay beach in very easy conditions - no surf, warm water (for the Atlantic anyway!) and absolutely no wind. The clubs put pedal to the metal from the start trying to rack up the points early. A few early disqualifications reminded the competitors that this was provincial champs and they had to stay focused and disciplined to succeed!
An early start at Clifton on sunday morning saw the sun popping over the mountain as the competitors lined up for the first race. With some sun-kissed shoulders and noses from saturday, the day soon saw everyone huddling under umbrellas and gazebos in search of shade. Even with the thermometer hitting the high 30's, the competitors kept their cool and gave it their all.
False Bay SLC's Aimee Faulmann made a clean sweep on the beach taking 6 gold medals by winning both the Flags and Sprints in all three age groups. Robin Stander, representing Strandfontein SLC, demonstrated how to deal with the burning hot sand - by flying across it - and took a gold medal for senior mens Flags and silver for Sprints. Gold in the senior Sprints was won by the (in)famous Milnerton lighthouse, Brent Shields, with good showings on the beach from his team mates, David Marx and Simon Shield. No surprises then that Milnerton SLC's A team ran away with the Beach relay title. Monwabisi SLCs Tarquin Paramoer and Llandudno SLC's Dexter Tangocci battled it out in the u/19 Sprints and Flags, with K. O'Shea of Fish Hoek SLC and Strandfontein SLCs Darryl Windvogel vieing for the u/16 beach titles.
LWP team stalwart and New Balance Fish Hoek Surf member, Jasper Mocke took gold in the Single Ski, Surf Swim, Run/Swim/Run, Ocean man and Beach run, as well as a silver in the Board race, to win the Senior mens Competitor of the Competition hands down. Team mate Eloisse van Gyssen won 2 gold medals in the Ocean woman and Board race, a silver in the Single Ski and a bronze medal in the Surf Swim to beat out up and coming Fish Hoek member, Dominique Dryding, for the senior ladies Competitor of the Competition trophy. Dominique took the u/19 ladies Competitor of the Competition title by winning 3 gold medals in the Board race, Surf Swim and Run/Swim/Run, with team mate Lisa Cowling picking up the u/16 title by winning the Ocean woman, Surf Swim and Run/Swim/Run. Fish Hoek SLCs Dominic Notten took home both the u/16 and u/19 mens Competitor of the Competition titles - winning 6 individual gold medals in the junior arena.
Not surprisingly New Balance Fish Hoek SLC ran away with the overall title scoring a massive 1549 points, with Big Bay SLC coming in 2nd with 563 points and Milnerton SLC took up the 3rd step on the podium with 394 points. Strandfontein SLC showed that they are a club to watch in the future by jumping up to 6th place with 184 points. Full club rankings are listed at the end of this article.
Congratulations to all LWP competitors who achieved their own personal goals - good luck to all of you at the upcoming SA champs in PE! A BIG thank-you from all the competitors to the officials and referees on the beach, and our scorers Jill and Joyce in the clubhouse, who volunteer their time to make sure things run smoothly. Thank-you also to Cybersmart Clifton SLC (and especially Dawn Gotggens!) for hosting and organising this competition.

LWP NIPPER CHAMPIONSHIPS
On the 20th and 21st March 2010, nippers from all over WP will converge on Big Bay beach to battle it out for the title of LWP nipper champions!
The competition is sure to be tough as our future lifeguards compete for various titles in the u/10, u/12 and u/14 age groups. They will also be vieing for the attentions of the selectors who will select the LWP nipper team at this competition. This team will compete at the LSA Inter-regional Nipper champs in PE in April under the guidance of their manager, Diane Craemer.
For the LWP champs, New Balance Fish Hoek SLC are firm
favourites having racked up a whopping 1498 points in the 3 nipper carnivals
this season. Big Bay SLC is not too far behind having scored 1117 points so far
this season with a group of nippers that are determined to give Fish Hoek a run
for their money! Be sure to look out for some other up and coming clubs whose
nippers have been training hard all season and are constantly improving their
rankings at the nipper carnivals - Strandfontein, Alpha and Strand are pushing
hard to get onto the podium.
The clubs dont carry any points into LWP champs but the following ranking shows the points the clubs have accumulated in the 3 nipper carnivals this season:
1) Fish Hoek (1498), 2) Big Bay (1117), 3) Clifton (631), 4) Strand (523), 5) Llandudno (328), 6) Alpha (264), 7) False Bay (124), 8) Strandfontein (112), 9) Mnandi (72), 10) Milnerton (65)
